Strangely, I’ve never been to the UK. To remedy this, I’m making a stopover in London on my way to Tanzania. What should I be sure to see/eat/buy/do?

Go the Tate Modern (duh), the Science Museum (across from the Victoria & Albert Museum). And for pete’s sake eat crepes at an authentic french place that is a couple blocks down the street from the Science Museum. Also, go to the Barbican. Yeah, all in 36 hours.
